Simple Ways to Change Your Wardrobe on a Budget.

Simple Ways to Change Your Wardrobe on a Budget.

Many of us have considered and want to change our wardrobe, but we'd rather not when we consider the hassle that comes with it. But then again, we remember that sometimes, revamping your wardrobe is a matter of necessity, especially as it relates to a lifestyle change or more commonly, growth. I mean, surely, when you get into the labour market, the last thing you want to do is appear to work with clothes that were great for school but wrong for a professional.

However, whether it is a matter of necessity or preference, the major thing that hinders changing our wardrobe is money. But what if I told you that you can change your wardrobe on a budget? What if I told you that you don’t have to break the bank to upgrade your wardrobe. Still in doubt? Well, follow along as I show you 7 simple ways to change your wardrobe on a budget. Check them out below:

Do An Inventory of Your Wardrobe

The first thing you need to do when you realise you need to update your wardrobe is to take an inventory of your wardrobe. Trust me, you might be surprised by what you will find in your wardrobe when you do a proper inventory. There are probably some pieces that are hidden beneath the pile of clothes or deep inside your closet/wardrobe. Plus, you might find that you own certain things and have not been taking advantage of them. Doing an inventory will help you categorise the clothes that need to go, those that need to stay and what you need to give your wardrobe a new look.

Set a Budget

I’m sure you are not surprised this is on the list because we cannot be talking about updating your wardrobe on a budget without talking about setting a budget. After doing an inventory and determining what you need to buy, you should set a budget based on what you can afford. Of course, you can also expand your budget a bit considering your need. Remember though that whatever you do, don’t spend more than you can afford.

Make a List

After doing a proper inventory and setting a budget, make a list of what you need to give your wardrobe the look you have in mind. After all, you are not going shopping on a whim neither should you be buying impulsively considering you are seeking to change your wardrobe on a budget. So, determine what you need and write them down to guide your budgeting and shopping. Of course, the list might not be based only on what you need/want and be largely based on what you can afford, so employ the principle of the scale of preference while writing your list.

Learn What Works for You

One thing that many of us will agree on is the fact that fashion or style is fluid. Some styles are more age-appropriate, career-appropriate and body-appropriate for you than others. And you also have an idea of what you would consider fashionable. The trick is to find a balance between the two concepts to establish your personal style. Now, you might not be well-versed in the fashion world but that’s when Google comes to the rescue. Search for different great styles for people with your persona and work out your own style from the different ideas you will find online. This is necessary so you don’t buy a bunch of things that you find uncomfortable or things that don’t end up looking great on you. I mean, the idea is to update your wardrobe and not dumb it down.

Shop Secondhand

Secondhand shopping is probably the easiest way to get what you want at the cheapest price ever. Trust me, if you are shopping on a budget, shopping for thrift clothes is your best bet at getting quality at affordable prices. Although it can be quite overwhelming to look through tons of clothes, if you are a little patient, you will be surprised with the kind of gems you will find at thrift stores.

Prioritise Versatile Colours

This is a great way of mixing your style without spending too much. Instead of getting unique colours that will need a particular colour to match, you can try getting neutral/versatile colours like black, brown, white, and blue, especially for your trousers, skirts, and shoes. That way, you can get tops with different colours to go. And even if you want to go for other less-neutral colours, make sure they match a few pieces in your wardrobe. This is so you will not be left with clothes you can’t wear because nothing matches.

Avoid Duplicates

Trust me, even with a list in your hand, certain items will call to you when you go shopping. But as much as you can, try to stick to your list. But more importantly, avoid buying something you already have in your closet no matter how cute you think it looks.

Let me conclude by reminding you to also keep an open mind. Now, I know I’ve been sounding very rigid with my advice because the end goal is to show you how to change your wardrobe on a budget. So, I needed to make sure you achieve your goal of not breaking the bank.

However, that does not mean you cannot keep an open mind, especially when you are shopping secondhand. You might find many pieces that would look great on your wardrobe that you may not have considered. So, if you come across such pieces and it won’t hurt your pocket - I still need to emphasise that - you should definitely consider it.
